Enrolling in Medicare Part B: Don’t Miss the March 31 Deadline!

Understanding Medicare Part B Enrollment

If you’re 65 or older and didn’t sign up for Medicare Part B during your initial or special enrollment periods, you have another chance. The annual General Enrollment Period (GEP) runs from January 1 through March 31, allowing you to enroll in Part B and avoid further delays in coverage.

Key Points:
  1. Medicare Part B is voluntary but requires a monthly premium—many beneficiaries pay a standard premium and additional costs.
  2. Delaying Part B enrollment may result in a lifetime penalty, increasing the longer you wait.
  3. Enrollment in Medicare is not automatic unless you are already receiving Social Security benefits.
Who Can Use the General Enrollment Period?

You are eligible to enroll in Part B during the GEP if:

  • You declined Part B during automatic enrollment at age 65.
  • You missed your Initial Enrollment Period and did not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
  • Your Part B coverage ended due to non-payment or voluntary withdrawal.
  • You need to purchase Part A (hospital insurance) because you are not eligible for free Part A.

How to Sign Up for Medicare Part B

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) administers Medicare, but applications for Parts A and B are processed by the Social Security Administration. Here’s how to enroll:

  1. Complete the CMS-40B Application for Enrollment in Medicare Part B.
  2. Submit the form via fax, mail, or in-person drop-off at your local Social Security office.
  3. Call 1-800-772-1213 for a video, phone, or in-person appointment if you need assistance.

After signing up for Part B, you can also choose a Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan through a private insurer.

When Will My Coverage Start?

Your Part B coverage starts the first day of the month after you enroll. For example, if you sign up in February, coverage begins on March 1. A new Medicare card will be mailed to you.

Medicare Part B Costs & Late Enrollment Penalty

The standard Part B premium for 2025 is $185 per month. If you have a higher income, you may pay more.

Late Enrollment Penalty

Your Part B premium increases by 10% for each 12-month period you were eligible but didn’t sign up. This penalty applies for as long as you have Medicare unless:

  • You qualify for a Medicare Savings Program due to limited income.
  • You receive Social Security disability benefits and have turned 65.

A late enrollment penalty may also apply for Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage).

Final Thoughts

If you need Medicare Part B and missed previous enrollment opportunities, don’t wait! Sign up during the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) to avoid costly penalties and ensure access to essential medical care.
