Medicare for People with Disabilities
Eligibility for Medicare Under Age 65
Medicare isn't just for those over 65; certain people under 65 with disabilities are also eligible. To qualify, you must have been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for at least 24 months. There is a five-month waiting period after a beneficiary is determined to be disabled before they begin collecting SSDI benefits.
Enrollment Process for Medicare with Disabilities
Once you qualify for SSDI, you should receive your Medicare card automatically in the mail after the 24-month waiting period has passed. If you do not receive your card or have any questions, it's important to contact your local Social Security office for assistance.
Medicare Benefits for People with Disabilities
Medicare coverage for people with disabilities is identical to that for those who qualify based on age. This includes a wide range of services such as hospital care, nursing home care, home health services, physician visits, and community-based services. Importantly, the healthcare services provided do not need to be directly related to the individual’s disability to be covered.
